15 Questions with Coach Mikaela

If you’ve been to an 8:30am or noon class at CrossFit 701, then you’ve probably met Mikaela. Which means you’ve also then experienced the “Mikaela Warm-Up”... spoiler alert, its spicy!

Coach Mikaela is a CF-L3, and USAW Level 1, Precision Nutrition Level 1, and numerous additional continuing ed classes. Her passion for CrossFit and all things fitness shines through whether she’s coaching or working out at CrossFit 701.

Here is a short interview with Coach Mikaela!

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

Since Jan 2015, so 8 years?!

Why do you coach?

I love seeing people make improvements, and being able to help them on that journey. It's such a rewarding feeling!

How do you take your coffee?

No coffee!!

Describe your coaching style.

I would say I am very technique focused, and love working on the Olympic lifts.

What athletic achievement are you most proud of?

I am proudest of finishing a full marathon and competing at University Nationals for Weightlifting twice!

What non athletic achievement are you most proud of?

Passing my CF-L3!

Favorite non-crossfit activities?

Going hiking!

If you were to describe yourself as an animal, what would you be?

Someone once told me a black panther so I'll go with that.. but I was also wearing all black that day lol

What's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?

I don't like to try weird foods, I'm not very adventurous.

What is a pet peeve of yours?

Being late.

Batman or Superman?

Superman

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

Stay true to yourself. At the end of the day you're looking at yourself in the mirror, and you need to be happy with the person staring back at you. Don't do something just because someone else tells you to or expects you to. Stick with your values and your beliefs.

If you have to sing karaoke, what song do you pick?

That's not going to happen

What's your favorite class/course that you have taken?

That would probably be the CF Level 2 course. It was very informative and eye opening. There is nowhere for you to hide any weaknesses as a coach. Also, not really a "course," but I absolutely loved my semester-long internship at Wasatch CF and FNX.

What piece of advice would you give to a new athlete?

Stick with the process. It may seem overwhelming at first, but it will get better. And don't skip a day just because you don't know how to do a movement, we always have a modification option available!
